Professor Luis Ruilope trained in medicine at the University of Madrid, completing his residency in Nephrology at the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, Madrid. After his PhD thesis at Complutense University in Madrid, he became Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology (1977–1984). He is current Head of Hypertension Unit 12 at Octubre Hospital, Madrid, and Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Autonoma University, Madrid. His main research interests include hypertension and the kidney. Prof. Ruilope is current President of the Spanish Hypertension Society. He is former member of the Scientific Council of the International Society of Hypertension (1994–1998) and the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (1998–2005). He is Chairman of the EndPoint Committee of VALUE and committee member of many national and international clinical trials, as well as European IDNT coordinator. Prof. Ruilope is on the editorial board of many scientific journals, and is former Associate Editor of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2002–2006).
